The Difference Between Pool Table and Billiard Table: JH Brothers Explains

Many people use the terms “Pool Table” and “Billiard Table” interchangeably, but did you know there’s a difference between the two? At JH Brothers Technology Pte. Ltd., we specialize in both Pool Tables and Billiard Tables, and we’re here to clear up the confusion—so you can choose the right table for your game room, bar, or home.
First, let’s start with the basics: both Pool and Billiards are cue sports played on a table with pockets, but they differ in terms of table size, ball count, and rules. The main difference lies in the table itself and the type of game played on it.
A Billiard Table (also known as a Carom Billiard Table) is typically larger than a Pool Table, measuring 9ft to 10ft in length. Unlike Pool Tables, Billiard Tables do NOT have pockets. Instead, the game is played by bouncing the cue ball off two object balls to score points—this is called a “carom” or “bank shot.” Billiard Tables have a smooth, flat surface made of high-density slate, and the rails (cushions) are designed to provide consistent rebound. The balls used in Billiards are larger and heavier than Pool balls, with a diameter of 2.4 inches (61mm).
On the other hand, a Pool Table has six pockets (one in each corner and one on each side rail) and is smaller than a Billiard Table, typically measuring 7ft to 9ft in length. Pool is played with a set of 16 balls: one cue ball, seven solid-colored balls, seven striped balls, and one black 8-ball. The goal of Pool varies depending on the game (e.g., 8-ball, 9-ball), but it generally involves pocketing your assigned balls and then the 8-ball (or 9-ball) to win. Pool Tables also have a slate surface, but the rails are designed to guide the balls into the pockets, with a slightly different rebound angle than Billiard Tables.
At JH Brothers, we craft both Pool Tables and Billiard Tables with the same commitment to quality. Our Billiard Tables feature high-quality slate tabletops and professional-grade rubber cushions, ensuring accurate caroms and consistent gameplay. Our Pool Tables are available in a range of sizes and styles, from home recreational models to commercial-grade tables for bars and game centers. We use premium materials, such as solid wood frames and scratch-resistant felt, to ensure durability and a superior playing experience.
So, which table is right for you? If you prefer fast-paced, pocket-based games with a variety of rules (like 8-ball or 9-ball), a Pool Table is the perfect choice. If you enjoy more strategic, pocketless gameplay that requires precision and skill, a Billiard Table is ideal. Either way, JH Brothers has you covered—our tables are designed to meet the needs of both amateur enthusiasts and professional players.
